While 88% of coastal bathing waters in the EU were classified as excellent, only 78% of inland bathing waters achieved the same status. From my perspective, the country with the best water quality overall is Cyprus, with 100% of its waters being classified as excellent. This is followed by Greece (97.1%), Bulgaria (96.9%), and Austria (96.5%). These countries have implemented robust water quality management systems and have made significant investments in infrastructure to protect their natural resources. However, it is also important to note that even the best-performing countries have areas for improvement. For example, Lithuania and Slovenia's coastal waters were of excellent quality, but their inland bathing waters dropped the overall score. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to water quality management that takes into account the unique characteristics of different water bodies. In terms of inland water quality, Austria and Finland emerged as the clear winners, with around 95% of their inland water being classified as excellent. Denmark (94.3%), Luxembourg (94.1%), and Germany (91.5%) complete the top 5 best waters. However, it is also worth noting that even these countries have areas for improvement. For example, Spain has the lowest water quality among inland waters, with over 11% of its rivers and lakes classified as poor quality.
